How to road trip with two babies in 5 easy steps

A couple months ago my friend Grace agreed to go on a really long road trip with two babies and myself. One is 6 months old and the other is 7 months old.

Why she agreed to this? I will never know.

What did this trip consist of? Let me tell you.

  1. Driving from Montana to Salt Lake City, Utah.
  2. Staying in Salt Lake for 2 nights.
  3. Driving from Salt Lake to Capitol Reef National Park.
  4. Camping there for 2 nights.
  5. Driving from Capitol Reef to St. George.
  6. Staying there for a night.
  7. Driving from St. George to Salt Lake.

According to google maps, we drove a total of 13 hours and 17 minutes one way, not including all the sanity stops along the way.

The first leg was full of screaming babies and stressed out moms.

Lesson #1

When you go on a road trip with two babies, take 30-60 minute stops every 3-4 hours.

These are important because, even though your baby may not be super mobile, they need to stretch out and wiggle. Also, car seats are a perfect equation for diaper blow outs.

At these stops we would change their diapers, feed them, and let the babies have naked time.

Lesson #2

Put pillows between the door and the car seat. Babies LOVE throwing their toys specifically in that direction so that the toys can never be accessed by moms.

Lesson #3

When on a road trip with two babies, you will want your babies to nap at the same time. Which is obviously nearly impossible. We put brown noise on over the car speakers. This turns your car into a reverberating sleep haven for babies. However, it will drive you nuts, which leads us to…

Lesson #4

Listen to tunes you love to regain your sanity. I’m pretty sure the first we jammed out to Lumineers, Girls Chase Boys, and probably Ke$ha.

Lesson #5

Baby car seat cave. This is a special invention by me. What you do is… get a thick blanket, put the blanket over the car seat and the seat of the car, have it block out light, give baby comfort item and binky, and then put individual sound machine near them.

This will make them sleep and stay calm for HOURS.

And that, folks, is how you have a fairly enjoyable long drive with 2 babies!
