We did the Salkantay Trek there without a guide, and then walked the whole way up, all over and down.

When you wake up in the morning, it will be cold. At least in December it was. And so you will want to layer up. Don’t do that. You will get real hot real fast! Like I did.
The walk up the thousands of Inca stairs is not easy! And it was drizzly. By the time we got to the top, my Chacos had rubbed my feet raw (again this was after 5 days of trekking). Thus I did the full day in bare feet. It wasn’t that bad!
You will want to buy your ticket in advance. We bought ours in Cusco at a tourist information booth. The ticket is very specific about when you have to be there. Our tickets dictated we needed to hike Mount Machu Picchu at 7 AM. That helps prevent over crowding.
Our first stop once we got to the top was to keep going up. We had bought the early morning tickets to go summit Mount Machu Picchu. When you go and if you are able to do a hike like that, I’d highly recommend it!
When we got to the top, the city was shrouded in clouds. As it got warmer, however, the mist burned away and there she was! It was such a beautiful site.
I swear, the Inca civilization had some of the best civil engineers on the planet. Everything is perfect… The stairs, homes, gardens, layouts, temples, buildings, water ways… When you go, you will see!
We kept running into travelers we had met earlier on the trail. It’s nice seeing a friendly face in such a magical place!
I am pretty sure I saw all it had to offer up there. It was truly awesome and very surreal actually being in a place I’d only seen in pictures.
At first It was because my feet were in so much pain but it evolved into a truly spiritual experience. I know… It sounds silly but it’s true.
Your pictures are beautiful and give a a feel for the lush greens and patterns of the city. It really is a remarkable site. I can imagine the people’s who occupied the city lived in such tranquility. I wish I knew more about the history to appreciate more of the historical reference to the times.
Beautifully documented.
What a cool experience and gorgeous pictures! I can’t believe you did it barefoot though!
That is a really cool experience! My husband lived lived in Bolivia for two years and it has been on our list to go back and visit South America!
You have a great ability to tell a story! I really enjoy your photo style as well. Fun read with lots of great info!
Your feet look so sore! I’m glad you didn’t give up and miss this beautiful place!
Great tips to help manage expectations for those visiting Machu Picchu. Bare feet!?!? You are adventurous!
What great pictures! This is definitely somewhere I’d love to visit. How far was the trek in no shoes?
Your feet!!!! I can’t imagine. LOL.
Wow, what an experience. Your photos are amazing. Very cool experience.
This was such an incredible trip! I can’t believe you did the whole trek in your bare feet. I can’t make it across my driveway 🙂
They say that place has some serious power. there must have been a reason you needed to be in bare feet.
I love that you took off your shoes. These photos are amazing! I need to go before I get too old to do this!
I would love to go but I wonder if it is kid friendly? I might need to wait until they are older. BEAUTIFUL photos!!!
Machu Picchu is so cool to see.
You are right, it seems expensive, but those views are priceless.
Absolutely love this! This hike looks awesome and great pics to see what’s going on and appreciate the tips too. Looks tedious but worth it!
