She asked me if it was hard traveling as an endowed, garment-wearing member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
The short answer? It is not convenient, but it is also not that hard.
To preface the rest of my answer, I am answering as a dirt bag backpacker who stayed in hostels, slept on couches, and what not.
Why? Because garments aren’t necessarily small and packable. In fact, they tend to take up quite a bit of space! And when you are back packing or packing light, they’re not ideal.
The first time I was really confronted with the conundrum of wearing garments while traveling was when I went back packing through the amazing country of Peru.
(Read all about that HERE!)
All I was traveling with was my 65 liter Osprey pack. This trip included about 10 or so cities, a 5 day back packing trip, and meeting my friends’ families. All that being said it’s hard to pack for all those occasions. I needed a sleeping bag and pad, hiking clothes, city clothes, socks, underwear, a book, a journal, flashlight, shoes…you get the idea.
Luckily, I had a 100% genius brain baby! I packed like 5 or 6 pairs of normal underwear and two or three pairs of garments. I don’t remember exactly how many because this trip was almost 5 years ago.
What I did was wear regular underwear with garments over them! Saved on space but also got to wear them for their magical powers! (Note: they do not have magical powers. Reference article previously written on Mormons and their Magic Undies)
It’s actually pretty nice. Keeps them cleaner longer. The garments, mean.
I hope I was able to answer your question on wearing garments while traveling!
So go forth my endowed, garment-wearing Mormon friends! Travel without worry because garments are awesome and so are your temple covenants.
Bring Dr. Bronners with you. Walk into the shower with your underwear on and wash them by hand. Hang them to dry over night and you’re good to go! Isn’t being a dirt bag so much fun?!
And as always, stay tuned! More awesome content coming your way!
Your arrivals are interesting though at age 60 I hope dirt bagging is something that remains in my past.
